The Parry McCluer High School boys basketball team earned a pair of road wins last week, defeating Nelson County 55-33 last Tuesday before cruising to a 63-24 over Pioneer District rival Bath County, on Friday night.

The Fighting Blues improved to 8-6 overall and 4-1 in the district, having won six of its last seven games, with the only loss in this time span coming against Rockbridge County on Jan. 7.

With the win over Nelson County, which fell to 2-7, the Blues completed a sweep of the season series. When the teams met in the season opener on Nov. 28 in Buena Vista, PM won 43-30.

Going over the rematch, PM head coach Tyler Kerr said the Blues struggled in the first half when they didn’t shoot well. “In the first half, we were a touch sluggish,” he said.

The Blues held a three-point lead over the Governors at halftime before extending the lead in the second half.

“In the second half, we started to get out in transition and put some buckets in to start to pull away,” said Kerr.

The PM coach said his team showed composure to continue playing with patience with the Governors. “We were up for the challenge of going into Nelson County,” said Kerr. “They are new to the schedule, so it’s unfamiliar to the guys, but it did not affect us.” PM 63, BC 24

The Blues coasted to a 63-24 road win over Bath County on Friday night.

Landon Catlett led PM with 14 points, while John Snider paced the Blues with 11 rebounds and dished out five assists. Every PM player in uniform scored. The Chargers fell to 3-8 overall and 1-4 in the district.

Reviewing the game, Kerr said, “We had a really good team performance against Bath County. They are much improved, and they are a scrappy bunch.” Kerr said that the Blues were flat in the first half of the game and, lacking energy to start the game. In the second half, the Blues began to dominate the game and pulled away.

The Blues were scheduled to play host to Craig County last night and will continue Pioneer District action at Narrows on Friday before playing host to Covington on Tuesday. Both nights will start with junior varsity action at 5:30 p.m.
