The Parry McCluer High School girls tennis team earned a 7-2 home win over Prince Edward County last Wednesday to improve to 7-0, while the Rockbridge County girls dropped three matches to fall to 2-10.
After winning at Prince Edward 6-3 just eight days earlier, the Fighting Blues were a bit more dominant against the Eagles in the rematch at the Southern Virginia University courts.
The Blues won five of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches, winning three matches by forfeit against the shorthanded Eagles.
PM head coach Alyssa Sewell said she was “very proud” of freshman Peyton Chittum, who played in her first match the previous week. She also praised sophomore Peira Conner, who “gave a great fight and powered through some horrible cramps.” Although Chittum and Conner lost 8-0 at No. 3 doubles, Sewell was proud of their effort and “proud of all my girls for powering through difficult matches.”
The Wildcats, who fell to 1-6 in the district, played three road matches in four days, falling 9-0 at Turner Ashby last Monday, coming up short at Broadway 7-2 last Tuesday, and losing at Harrisonburg 8-1 on Thursday.
“A tough week for us travelwise, and it showed a little bit,” said RC head coach Andrew Bellairs.
The RC coach said the Wildcats should have beaten Broadway after leading in all three doubles matches, but they “just fell off at the end.” All three RC doubles teams lost 8-6.
One of the highlights of the Broadway match was when RC sophomore Eleanor Goodhart was trailing 6-2 and won six games in a row to earn an 8-6 victory at No. 3 singles. Also winning for the Wildcats was senior Sara Topasna with an 8-2 win at No. 2 singles.
With the team win, Broadway (5-10 overall, 1-6 district) avenged a 5-4 loss at RC on March 28.
The lone RC winner against Harrisonburg (7-5, 4-2) was senior Sophia Fafatas with a 10-6 victory at No. 1 singles.
The Wildcats were scheduled to play host to Stuarts Draft yesterday and will play host to district rival Spotswood on Friday at 4:30 p.m. at the Lexington Country Club courts.
PM was scheduled to play host to Nelson County on Monday and will have a home match today, Wednesday, at Alleghany before playing at district rival Narrows on Thursday. The Blues will play host to RC on Monday at 5 p.m. at the SVU courts before concluding the regular season at Bath County on Tuesday. All matches are scheduled for 5 p.m.
