Memorial Placement Vote Comes As Surprise

April 28, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: The recent vote by the Lexington City Council to facilitate the placement of a war memorial at Jordans Point Park came as a surprise to me. It seems like there was very little thought or discussion about this before the vote to approve.

The master plan for Jordans Point Park does not include memorials. The city has a planning commission, a tree board and a cemetery advisory board and, as far as I can tell, none of these citizen boards vetted this proposal.

Did the Council think about the possibility of the placement of this structure in one of the city cemeteries or possibly along Woods Creek Trail between Overhill and Lime Kiln Road. Did anyone think that the memorial might better be located somewhere in the county such as the National Guard Armory? CHRIS WISE Rockbridge County
