RC Girls Lax Rallies Past Salem

Wednesday, May 3 -- The Rockbridge County High School girls lacrosse team used a key second-half run to overcome Salem 10-7 on a cold, rainy and windy night in Lexington.

McKenzie Hines tallied four goals and one assist to lead the way for the Wildcats (8-1). Bailey Stratton registered a hat trick to pace the Spartans (6-4-1).

Ella Walker's free-position goal put Salem ahead 6-5 with 15:16 to play in the second half. But the 'Cats responded by reeling off five consecutive scores to turn the game in their favor.

Hines tied the contest from the 8-meter arc with 11:49 to go. Josie Caldwell then notched back-to-back free-position markers to put RC in front for the first time on the night. Goals from Lily Youngman and Hines finished off the game-deciding spurt, giving the Wildcats a 10-6 edge with just 2:20 remaining.

Zoe Blair scored twice for the Spartans, while Bailey Redford made seven saves. Youngman finished with one goal and one assist for RC.

The Wildcats outshot Salem 23-12 and held a 13-4 advantage on the draw circle, led by five draw controls from Maddie Dahl and four for Libba Erskine. Hines totaled three draw controls, and she also paced the RC defense with four caused turnovers.

The 'Cats will travel to Cave Spring for a 5:30 p.m. contest on Thursday. RC returns home to face William Byrd on Monday, with that game also slated for a 5:30 p.m. start.
