Joan Hummel Canady, age 79, passed away unexpectedly while surrounded by family and holding hands with her husband on Saturday, May 6, 2023.

Joan Hummel Canady, age 79, passed away unexpectedly while surrounded by family and holding hands with her husband on Saturday, May 6, 2023.

Joan was born on Oct. 1, 1943, in Tucson, Arizona, to Louis Christian and Ina Wilson Hummel. 

She graduated from Brigham Young University studying speech therapy and dramatic arts. It was there that she met and courted her beloved husband, Wyatt Jackson Canady. The two were wedded at the Mesa, Arizona Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and treasured 56 years of marriage.

Joan is survived by her husband, Wyatt, and children Gina Canady, Louise Canady Bass and James Earl Bass, Beth-ann Canady and Jason Martinez, Emily Canady Fowler and Jeremy Fowler. She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Ottie Marie Canady; her grandchildren, Ember Rayne Forsberg and Robert Taylor Forsberg, Brandon Skye Adler and Rebecca Adler, Nathan Henry Adler; and her great-grandchildren, Ridley Reddick Roy Forsberg, Luna Mae Forsberg, Ivy Joan Forsberg; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Joan was preceded by her parents, Louis Christan Hummel and Ina Wilson Hummel, and her siblings, Glen Hummel, Gordon Hummel, Kay Hummel Goddard, and Loueen Hummel Lucas.

Joan enjoyed quilting, fiber arts, costuming, canning, baking, swimming, genealogy, historical reenactments, renaissance fairs, and theater. She was also a member of Theta Alpha Phi, a former Girl Scout leader, and a former primary teacher and church librarian. 

Joan’s interests also included the study of Native American and Irish folk history, and she greatly enjoyed her travels to Edinburgh, Scotland, and France 

A funeral will be held on Thursday, May 11, at 11 a.m. at the Harrison Funeral Home in Lexington. A graveside service will follow at Goshen Baptist Churchyard in Goshen.
