The Rockbridge County Council of Garden Clubs will present its annual plant sale this Saturday, 20 years after its first one.
The sale at Hopkins Green in Lexington will run from 9 a.m. to noon.
The Rockbridge County Council, comprised of five garden clubs, will again offer a good selection of plant material (ie. annuals, perennials, herbs), baked goods, gardening accessories, books or great ideas for Mother’s Day gifts.
There will also be plenty of good gardening information available.
Rockbridge County Council records indicate that 2003 was the first plant sale as a fundraiser for beautification efforts in Lexington and youth projects, with all profits going to the council. Since then the proceeds from the plant sale have supported the city in supplying the summer floral baskets along Lexington streets.
Each club contributes a designated portion of their sales to the council, which benefits both the council and the participating clubs with their individual projects.
Some of the landscape beautification projects of Council Garden Clubs have included the Lexington Garden Club’s planting of the new Gateway Garden triangle into Lexington’s downtown business area; Green Hills Garden Club’s maintenance of container gardens for its three area post offices and landscaping at two local churches; Natural Bridge Garden Club’s garden in front of the Rockbridge Area Relief Association’s building on Spotswood Drive and the herbs that are used in the preparation of the Community Table weekly meals; Glasgow Garden Club maintenance of the Rock Garden in Lexington at the U.S. 11 Bypass, its development and maintenance of the Centennial Park in Glasgow, and establishment and maintenance of the landscape around the Blue Star Memorial at Hines Memorial National Guard Armory; and the Blue Ridge Garden Club maintenance of the Veterans Memorial Garden on Main Street and oversight of the Roots and Shoots program for students at Waddell Elementary School.
“For 20 years the community has supported this endeavor whether it is bright and sunny or cool and rainy – so Rockbridge County Council of Garden Clubs are expecting that same great support for this year’s sale,” said a spokeswoman.
