It was with mixed emotions that Rockbridge Area Community Services bid a fond farewell to two of its long-time team members at the end of 2022: Carol Burke and Wendy Mace.
Mace had served the intellectually and developmentally disabled population for 30 years. She began her career at RACS as a residential direct care provider, filling various roles in multiple RACS residential facilities. She eventually worked her way up to finish as the director of the Developmental Services Unit. During her career, she also spent a few years in the service of the intellectually and developmentally disabled population at Valley CSB in Staunton.
Burke was originally hired in 1988 to manage the early intervention program, known locally as RAISE. Under her supervision, the RAISE program has become one of RACS most renowned programs, said Kim Shaw, executive director of RACS. “Colleagues near and far respected Carol for her experience, her knowledge of the early intervention system and her dedication to the families she served,” said Shaw.
Throughout the years, both Mace and Burke participated in numerous state and local committees and workgroups.
“They were always contributing to their field and striving to improve outcomes for marginalized populations,” said Shaw. “There is no way to measure or know how many individuals’ lives are better because of the direct and indirect work of these two amazing women. Both have undeniably had a meaningful, lasting and positive impact on the agency, its staff, and clients.”
While their retirements are worthy of celebration, Shaw said, their presence will be missed. “RACS wishes to thank Carol and Wendy for their contributions, congratulate them on their accomplishments and wish them all the pleasure life has to offer in retirement,” she said.
