Glasgow Town Council last Tuesday approved the hiring of Thomas Smals to fill the position of town manager for a probationary period.

He will succeed George Hayfield, who left the town manager’s position after two years to take the same role in Buchanan in March.

Council also hired Andrea “Andi” Bradley as administrative assistant to succeed Jane Higginbothem, who is retiring. Bradley, who has served on Town Council for the past several years, has stepped down to assume her new role in the town office. She would have been up for reelection this fall.

Mayor Paul Williams reminded those whose terms will expire this year that the deadline for signing up for reelection is June 20.

In other news at last week’s meeting, Council member Natalie Harris, reporting for the Planning Commission, said a survey would be included in the next water bill for town citizens. They will be eligible for a drawing for a $50 gift card upon completion of the survey.

Harris also noted there is a conference in Richmond on June 13-14 for Municipal League Council members for a cost of $63 per person. She would like the town to sponsor her and any other Council members who would wish to attend, especially for the main training session on the 14th. This was approved.

Charles Burch spoke to Council about a three-month extension to complete cleaning up his property at 605 Shawnee St., to remove temporary trailers, and to build a house for his family. That extension was given.

Carolyn Bradley, manager of the farmers market, noted they had a successful opening event on May 6, with 11 vendors displaying crafts and baked goods. Bizzee B’s BBQ and Blue Ridge Cider Doughnuts sold food. The regular market hours began on May 12-13, and will continue through the summer season.

She also asked Council to consider purchasing a small utility building for storage of market signs and other items related to the operation of the market. These items have been previously stored in the former Ruritan building sitting on the lot, which was sold to a private individual. She is to research buildings and bring information back to Council at the next meeting.

Councilman Brandall Branch expressed concern for the safety of children playing near the streets in his neighborhood due to folks exceeding the speed limits.

Councilwoman Lisa Rogers noted someone parked along the street between her home and Mohawk, and shot a mama fox with a den of babies.
