Jamaican Bobsled Team Wins Again

The Jamaican Bobsled Team won the 46th annual Lexington Road and River Relay on Saturday, May 6.

The Jamaican Bobsled Team won the 46th annual Lexington Road and River Relay on Saturday, May 6.

It was the fifth consecutive victory for the Jamaican Bobsled Team, who finished the 16.1mile run/bicycle/river run course in 1 hour and 22 minutes. Team members who reclaimed the coveted Silver Cup were Sam Allen, Brian Frazier and Blake Shester.

The relay consisted of a 3.5-mile run from the Rockbridge Regional Library to Beans Bottom, a 9.1-mile bicycle ride on paved, hilly roads; a 2.2-mile canoe/kayak section from Beans Bottom to Jordans Point, and then a 1.3mile loop that went on the Woods Creek Trail and started and ended at Jordans Point Park.

There were 27 teams competing, including 16 one-person teams, on the warm and sunny day.

Placing second overall was the men’s team Dragonite, finishing in 1:30:54.

Finishing third overall and claiming the men’s individual title was David Burkwall, 51, completing the course in 1:37:06.

The women’s individual winner was Sophia Breschi, 19, placing 12th overall in 1:46:58.

Claiming the women’s team title were the River Road Mamas, finishing 17th overall in 2:00:27.

Taking home the mixed team title for the second year in a row were the Swentys, placing 10th overall in 1:46:41.
