A Rockbridge County woman died following a fire at her home Monday afternoon.
Bonnie Clements, age 76, the lone occupant of the house at the time, was rescued by family members after the fire broke out, but she later died after being transported to Carilion Rockbridge Community Hospital.
According to a press release from Rockbridge County Fire and EMS Chief Nathan Ramsey, crews were dispatched to 341 Mackeys Lane near Fairfield around 3 p.m. and the first units found heavy fire throughout the house.
It took crews from six fire departments about 30 minutes to bring the fire under control, with units remaining on the scene about two hours.
The house was a total loss. Ramsey said. The Virginia State Police have been contacted to investigate the cause of the fire, he noted.
Responding to the fire were the South River, Raphine, Buena Vista, Rockbridge Baths, Kerrs Creek and Lexington fire departments, along with the Fairfield Rescue Squad, Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Office, and Rockbridge County Fire-Rescue.
