May 15, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: It is encouraging to hear the mayor of New York assign some responsibility to the animal agriculture industry for contributing, along with the fossil fuel companies, significant harm to Earth’s climate. Both industries lead the pack in producing damages catalogued by serious science as “first to fix” if humanity is to reverse its current drive toward extinction.
But, humans have a bad tendency to place blame where real accountability can be conveniently obscured. In truth, it’s not these industries that deserve the blame for the planet’s climate problem: It’s the humans who eat meat that support the animal farming industry. As for the Exxons of the world, it’s satisfying to pummel the mean old-fossil fuel companies, but it’s not their fault. They produce fossil fuels, but we humans are the ones burning it.
