May 15, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: We have veterans in our community who walk through their days with a starkly different consciousness than those of us who never served in the military.
They have seen war! They have seen their friends badly maimed, killed in action and often up close. They have lost buddies to suicide. There are no unwounded soldiers in war.
These men and women have big hearts.
They chose to train to be our defenders “up to and including my life.”
As Memorial Day approaches, to truly honor our dead, let us serve the living.
June is PTSD awareness month … and yes, there are other life nightmares that can cause PTSD … but war - the sights, the smells of the wounded, the maimed, the dead!
Listen to their stories ... horrifying stories.
This Memorial Day please do not pass the Buddy Poppy table without donating and then humbly wearing your poppy, please appreciate and stand strong for our freedoms. Our veterans have seen first-hand countries fall ... they can tell you how ugly and sad it is ... listen to their stories. Support our Shenandoah Valley VFW Post 1499 and their vision for the future, support our George C Marshall Chapter of MOAA and their fundraisers.
Let’s truly honor our dead by serving the living.
