Frederick King Carter of Buena Vista was born to the late Windle and Margaret Carter, a businessman and a teacher, in Rockbridge County on Sept. 3, 1928. He passed away peacefully on May 16, 2023.

Fred was a renowned Angus cattle breeder and retired from his profession at the age of 84. He and his brother James “Jim” Carter co-owned Skyview Farms of Rockbridge County. In November 2017, the American Angus Association awarded the brothers the Historic Angus Herd Award for their excellence in continuous registered Angus cattle production for nearly three-quarters of a century.

Windle purchased Fred’s first pure-bred Angus cow as a birthday gift, cultivating his adolescent son’s passion for the breed, which continued until his death. Fred was known to entertain and dazzle the farm’s clientele with his amazing memory. A client would point to any cow and Fred would detail the Angus’ pedigree without the need to reference its bloodline. This recall extended to every cow produced by Fred and Jim from sire, dam, to great-greats in the pedigree upwards to 10,000 cows.

In addition to his profession, Fred served on the Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors, as a board member of First National Exchange Bank, a Ruritan Club member, and was a devout member of the Democratic Party. Fred was a voracious reader and loved history. In addition to watching sporting events, he loved a good Western movie or series.

Education was important to him and he sought to contribute to his nieces’ education at all opportunities; not only monetarily but even reading a couple theses. He had many philanthropic endeavors throughout his life.

Fred is survived by his companion, Mary J Tomlin; his brother, James Carter; his sisters, Wendellyn (Gail) Carter Clark and Carolyn Carter Ruley; and his nieces, Kimberly Carter, Christy Carter-Camden and Michelle Agnor Wheeler.

The family is planning a celebration of life service for Fred the first of September to coincide with his 95th birthday. Please contact the family for details.

Arrangements are being handled by Bolling, Grose, & Lotts Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
