Traffic Concerns Expressed

Residents of the New Cameron/Pinehurst/Woods Edge roads off of Thornhill Road have petitioned the Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors to address traffic concerns in their neighborhood.

Reading from a letter at the May 22 supervisors’ meeting that she’d previously written to the board last fall, Carol Calkins said motorists routinely exceed the 25 mph speed limit and do rolling stops at intersections. Many young families live in the neighborhood and engage in a lot of walking, biking and skateboarding along the streets.

She suggested a traffic study that could show traffic calming devices are warranted as well as sidewalks. She also requested stepped up enforcement of the speed limit. She presented a petition with 45 signatures of neighbors who joined in asking that the traffic issues be addressed.

Buffalo Supervisor Leslie Ayers, whose district encompasses the neighborhood, is bringing up the matter with the Virginia Department of Transportation and the sheriff’s office.

New Boats Purchased

Rockbridge County is acquiring two new swift water rescue boats that are to replace the regional rescue boats currently in service at the Glasgow Volunteer Fire Department.

The Board of Supervisors on May 22 approved a lease agreement with the GVFD that calls for the new boats to be housed and maintained by the GVFD for regional rescues. The initial term of the lease is to go through June 30, 2024, and to be automatically renewed from year-to-year, unless either party gives a six-months notice to pull out of the agreement.
