Daniel Edward Cook, 87, of Raphine died in the early morning of Wednesday, May 10, 2023, in Augusta Hospital from complications of Parkinson’s Disease.
Dan was born on Sept. 26, 1935, in West Bend, Wisconsin, the middle child of the late Edward and Helen (Immel) Cook.
After his graduation from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, he enlisted in the Army and served as a snare drum player in the Third Armored Division Band stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. It was there, playing in his off-duty hours in a production of Oklahoma that he met his wife Nancy, the woman he would love all his life.
In 1966, he moved his young family to Washington, D.C., to take a job with the U.S. Department of Commerce, where he remained for his illustrious career. He won the highest honor of the Commerce Department, the Annual Honor Gold Medal, for simplifying the Export Administration’s regulations. After retirement he found his dream home in Raphine, where he enjoyed playing with the Stonewall Brigade Band.
Dan was predeceased by his brother, Joel Cook, and his grandson, Aiden Edward York.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy (Blevins) Cook; his sibling, Steve “Stef” Cook; his children, Jonathan (Kim) Cook and Anna-Marie (Chip) York; his grandchildren, Brendan Cook, Tristen Cook, Ronan York; and many cats.
A memorial service is planned for later this summer.
