Rockbridge County and Parry McCluer high schools recently named four graduating seniors as male and female athletes of the year, and 40 student-athletes received postseason honors – 31 from RC and nine from PM.
For RC, football and lacrosse player Garrett Stillwell was named the male athlete of the year, while swimmer Ali Pfaff was chosen as the female athlete of the year.
For PM, football and basketball player John Snider was named the male athlete of the year, while volleyball and basketball player Anna Claytor was selected as the female athlete of the year.
The RC baseball team, which went 10-11 and made it to the first round of the Region 3C tournament under head coach Travis Roadcap, had four all-district selections. Senior Cohen Paxton was named to the all-district first team as a pitcher and to the alldistrict second team as an outfielder, while senior Derek Smith was selected to the all-district first team as a third baseman. Senior Tucker Hopkins was chosen to the all-district second team as a utility player, as was sophomore shortstop Clay Irvine.
From the RC softball team, which went 6-13 and made it to the first round of the Region 3C tournament under head coach Keston Pelter, there were three all-district selections. Senior Kaydence Wilson was named to the all-district first team as a utility player, while second baseman Lilly Purcell and outfielder Kelsie Caldwell, both seniors, were chosen to the all-district second team.
The PM softball team, which went 11-8 and advanced to the Region 1C quarterfinals under head coach Troy Clark, had nine all-district selections. Making the all-district first team were senior utility player Claudia Coleman, junior shortstop Payton Emore, junior catcher Autumn Mundy, sophomore first baseman Olivia Julian and sophomore outfielder Logan Vest. Junior Gracey Shafer was selected to the alldistrict second team. Receiving honorable mention honors were sophomores Victoria Hamilton, Natalie Mohler and Alysa Wheeler.
All-district honors for the PM baseball team will be announced soon, now that Pioneer District rival Narrows has concluded its baseball season.
The RC girls soccer team, which went 5-11 under head coach B.J. Flack, had seven alldistrict sections. Senior midfielder Maliyah Hickling, junior forward Sophie Vaught and sophomore defender Madeline Swisher were named to the alldistrict first team. All-district second team selections were junior goalkeeper Sophia Perlozzo and three sophomores: midfielders Brooke Eichelberger, Madelyn Jones and Lydia Kendall.
From the RC boys soccer team, which went 2-12-1 under head coach Scott Youngdahl, senior midfielder Cole Boller-Pinkham was named to the alldistrict first second team.
The RC girls lacrosse team was 16-1 going into the Class 4 state semifinals yesterday at Western Albemarle. Under the direction of head coach Susan Nye, the Wildcats won their third consecutive Region 4D title last month and had 11 all-region selections. Making the all-region first were three seniors – midfielder McKenzie Hines, goalie Rachel Hines and defender Jaden McCoy – along with freshman attacker Lola Mulitalo and two juniors: attacker Nala Shearer and defender Libba Erskine. All-region second team selections were senior attacker Lily Youngman and junior midfielder Maddie Dahl. Receiving honorable mention honors were senior defender Lexie Polly, junior attacker Halina Homiak and freshman defender Nadia Gaydos.
From the RC boys lacrosse team, which went 9-7 and advanced to the Region 4D semifinals under head coach Robert Hull, there were five all-region selections. Making the all-region first team were a pair of seniors, attackman River Hull and defender Colby Jarvis, and two sophomores, goalie Jack Jensen and midfielder Alex Nye. Freshman FOGO (face off get off) Andrew Kelly was named to the all-region second team.
