Ten Rockbridge area men were among the members of Washington and Lee University’s largest graduating class. Miss Mary Monroe Penick was bestowed an honorary degree of Doctor of Fine Arts. -In a special meeting, the Lexington PTA unanimously adopted a proposed resolution concerning sex education in schools. - Plans were announced for acquisition of Bernson Mills Inc. of Buena Vista by Stevcoknit Inc. of New York. A major expansion of the Buena Vista operation would double the work force from 250 to 500.

Lexington City Council members voted unanimously to appoint Mimi Elrod to fulfill the unexpired term of Pat Mayerchak who resigned from council due to a change in residence. - Members of the Board of Supervisors were not happy about the escalating costs of capital improvements in county schools. The projected total of a multi-year plan was approaching $30 million. - The new Lexington Police Department headquarters was dedicated with about 40 people in attendance. A gift from the family of Roy J. and Ellen Dixon Tomlinson made possible the purchase of new exercise equipment for the officers such as free weights and workout machines.
