In a busy week of competition, the Parry McCluer High School wrestling team placed second of 20 teams at the Matt Bryant Memorial Duals on Saturday at Franklin High School. The Fighting Blues also hosted a home tri-meet last Monday, in which they routed Giles and tied Alleghany.

At Franklin, the Blues went 4-1. PM, a Class 1 school, edged Mathews 41-39 before falling to Class 2 school King William 42-36. The Blues beat Lancaster 57-30, cruised to a 54-18 win over Windsor, and routed Norfolk Collegiate 54-12.

Reviewing the duals, PM head coach Jeremiah Brockenbrough said, “We had a good day. My guys are starting to really turn the corner.”

Five different Blues went 5-0 in the duals: freshman Jacob Shafer (126-pounds) and seniors Ryan Patterson (120), Cody Thomas (190), Kabell Austin (220) and Cole Chittum (285/heavyweight).

Blues going 4-1 were sophomore Jackson Brockenbrough (144) and freshman Clyde Vassar (106), while sophomores Cyler Driscoll (113) and Junior Convers (175) went 3-2. Going 2-3 was junior Scottie Garrett (157).

In last Monday’s home meet, the Blues cruised to a 68-6 win over Giles and tied Alleghany 42-42.

Grateful for the fan support throughout the week, Brockenbourgh said, “I really appreciate all the parents that traveled with us. We did a lot of wrestling. Our program’s growing, and it’s starting to show.”

Today, Wednesday, PM will compete in a dual meet at Giles, starting at 5:30 p.m. The Blues will compete in the Rural Retreat Invitational on Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. PM will then have its final home competition of the season, a dual against Pioneer District rival Bath County, next Wednesday, Jan. 25, at 5 p.m.
