June 5, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: “Arguing it does not do enough to rein in federal spending, Rep. Ben Cline (R-6th) on Wednesday voted against a bill to suspend the nation’s debt ceiling that passed the U.S. House with support from a bipartisan coalition.”
Ben Cline surely knows when the credit card bill for purchases made comes due you pay it or face collection agents. He may ask his financially struggling constituents about this issue as they attempt to feed themselves and their families.
Ben Cline surely knows the debt ceiling has to do with paying past spending, not future! Or, debt ceiling means purchases have been made and payment is now due.
Ben Cline said, “Arguing it does not do enough to rein in federal spending ...” The way he is arguing “I cannot in good conscience vote for a roughly $4 trillion debt increase ‘deal’ ... I will continue fighting for the people of Virginia’s Sixth District to cut inflation-fueling federal spending … and reduce spiraling debt that has resulted in untold financial hardship for the American people.”
Does Ben Cline know that the way he is cutting taxes for the wealthy and social programs for the poor (in his Sixth District), you’d think the greedy were needy and the needy were greedy.
I quote the Rev. Dr. William Sloane Coffin, “The primary problems of the planet (Ben Cline’s Sixth District) arise not from the poor, for whom education is the answer; they arise from the well-educated, for whom selfinterest is the problem.”
It is my strong opinion Cline’s vote did not benefit all his “people of Virginia’s Sixth District.” CARL F. PATTISON Rockbridge County
