This Saturday in Crozet, Virginia Cooperative Extension in partnership with Chiles Family Orchard will host an introductory seminar on peach tree establishment and ma n a g e ment for home owners and small-scale producers from 9 to 11 a.m.

Virginia’s climate is suitable to growing excellent peaches but the tree and the fruit have to be carefully nurtured and managed in order to realize high quality fruit. Grace Monger, Extension agent for Nelson County, and managers with Chiles Family Orchard will offer guidance on variety selection, pruning, early season fruit thinning, and disease management.

Watch this space for similar seminars that will address apples and specialty tree fruits (like persimmons and paw-paws) later this summer.

To register for this free seminar, contact the Nelson County Extension office at (434) 263-7180 or [email protected]. The seminar will be held at Chiles Peach Orchard, 1351 Greenwood Road, Crozet. Most of the seminar will take place in an outdoor pavilion, rain or shine, along with an optional orchard walk over easy to moderate terrain. So participants should come prepared to be outside and dress appropriate to the weather.
