LGBTQ+ Students’ Security Addressed
A community member spoke up for the safety and security of students at the Rockbridge County School Board’s June meeting.
Hugh Henderson, a Lexington resident, director of the Appalachian Homeless Mission and the president of HCI Global Trade, commended Lexington City Schools and Rockbridge County Public Schools for their dedication to the education of Rockbridge County’s students as he’s had four children go through both school districts.
Henderson also applauded the local divisions for their safety procedures, but he said he would like to see more security reflecting the needs of an evolving society.
“Today, I would like to start a discussion about a part of the curriculum having to do with gender, fluidity and sex education for K-6,” he said. “For the record, I care about transgender children and homosexuals, because I follow Jesus who says we are to love everybody without distinction – without any distinction at all, so I am totally for the safety and love of these people, whoever they are.”
Henderson continued, “But, I’m keen to learn more in the coming meetings about the principals of safety and common sense as applied to this curriculum, the LGBTQ+ curriculum involving sexual content, which relates to psychological readiness, mental health, and our children’s sense of security and stability.”
Bid Phase Starts For Tech Center
Bidding opened for the renovation of the Rockbridge Innovation Center, formerly the F.S. Kay Vocational-Technical Center, on June 1, Superintendent Phillip Thompson told the Rockbridge County School Board at its meeting last week.
With the expectation that the bidding phase goes smoothly, Thompson hopes to ask for the Board’s approval of a contractor on July 11 with a groundbreaking event slated for July 18. Thompson noted that this date is tentative in the event that there are delays with bids.
