Kling Elementary School and Enderly Heights Elementary School will both receive $5,000 through the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries.
Buena Vista’s two elementary schools were selected to receive this grant out of 300 schools across 36 states. The Laura Bush Foundation awards funds to school libraries to encourage and develop a love of reading. Typically, grant funds are used to update and diversify library collections, notes a Laura Bush Foundation press release.
BVCPS applied for the Laura Bush grant in the fall of 2022 and administration was notified of its acceptance in March, the former principal of Kling, Lisa Clark, told The News-Gazette.
Both Clark and Devan Nicely – principal of Enderly Heights – were excited for this opportunity to revitalize their school libraries.
“At Enderly, we’re particularly excited about the prospect of increasing our magazine selection and refreshing some of our dated collections. Magazines can provide a diverse range of reading material and serve as a means to engage students with current topics and trends,” Nicely said. “By updating our collections, we aim to ensure that our students have access to up-to-date and relevant books that align with their interests and reading preferences.”
He continued, “This grant represents a unique chance to focus on improving our school libraries, offering our students the type of books they want to read while also expanding the selection to cater to the diverse tastes of our student body. We believe that a wellstocked and inviting library environment will foster a love for reading and provide ample opportunities for learning.”
