ARPA Purchases Approved
Buena Vista City Council this past Thursday approved spending $330,640 in American Rescue Plan Act funds for various items based on recommendation of Council’s budget and finance committee.
Expenditures approved are for the following: public works department - $100,000 for street lights, $20,000 for a street sweeper motor and $73,000 for a PALL water computer system; wastewater treatment plant - $9,425 for a bay door, $3,215 for a garage door and $40,000 for control building roof; police department - $45,000 for a new roof for police station; economic development department $40,000 for a new city website.
EDA’s Functions To Be Studied
John Dryden and Steve Baldridge have been appointed to a twoperson committee to research the Buena Vista Economic Development Authority’s mission, responsibilities and funding options to help determine how the authority can best serve the community.
Kristina Ramsey, economic development director for Buena Vista, reported to City Council this past Thursday the EDA’s appointment of this committee. She noted that the EDA had reappointed its officers during its annual reorganizational meeting in May. Reappointed were Brent Styler as chairman, Dryden as vice chairman and Ramsey as secretary-treasurer.
Police Chief Appointed
Wayne F. Handley was formally appointed to the position of Buena Vista police chief on Thursday by City Council. Handley, who was introduced as the city’s new police chief at Council’s meeting on June 1, will begin his new job on July 1.
Handley comes to Buena Vista from Norfolk, where he worked with the city’s sheriff’s office the past three years and for the city’s police department the previous 20 years. He is a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Old Dominion University and is working on a doctorate, also from ODU.
