Crowded Field Emerges For BV Council Races

Only one of three members of the Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors up for reelection this year has a challenger. And, there is a crowded field of candidates for Buena Vista City Council, with seven contenders for three seats.

Only one of three members of the Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors up for reelection this year has a challenger. And, there is a crowded field of candidates for Buena Vista City Council, with seven contenders for three seats.

The filing deadline for candidates to get their names on the ballots for regular elections on Nov. 7 was yesterday, June 20, at 7 p.m. Candidacies being reported here are those that were known as of this newspaper’s deadline at 4 p.m.

Former Buffalo District Supervisor Mack Smith is challenging the incumbent, Leslie Ayers. The other two incumbent members of the Board of Supervisors whose terms expire this year, Natural Bridge Supervisor David McDaniel and South River Supervisor Bob Day, are unopposed.

In Buena Vista, incumbent City Council members Stanley Coffey, Steve Webb and Cheryl Hickman are being challenged by Michele Casale, Jennifer Humphrey, Michelle Poluikis and Ronald Cash. Tyson Cooper, incumbent City Council member whose term doesn’t expire this year, is un- opposed in his bid for mayor. The incumbent mayor, Bill Fitzgerald, is not seeking reelection.

Four candidates are vying for three Buena Vista School Board seats – incumbents Teresa Ellison, Mac Felts and Wayne Flint and former member Brooke Baker.

Amy Hudson, incumbent Buena Vista treasurer, is thus far unopposed in her bid to be elected to this post. (Candidates have until Aug. 18 to file for this special election.)

There will be only one contested race in the election of three members of the Rockbridge County School Board. Lenna Ojure and Anne Russek are running for the Buffalo District seat currently held by Wendy Lovell, who is not seeking reelection. Neil Whitmore is unopposed in his bid for re-election to the Walkers Creek seat after potential challenger Lex LaMotte decided not to be a candidate. Kathy Burant is unopposed for reelection to her Natural Bridge seat.

Rockbridge County and Lexington Sheriff Steve Funkhouser, Commonwealth’s Attorney Jared Moon and Circuit Court Clerk Michelle Trout are all unopposed for reelection. Brooke Tomlin is unopposed in her bid to succeed David Whitesell as county commissioner of revenue. Three candidates are seeking to succeed Betty Trovato as county treasurer – Michele Clark, Melissa “Missy” Whitesell and Wendy Gilliam.

Candidates for the Natural Bridge Soil and Water Conservation District Board are (from Buena Vista) incumbents Herbie Huffman and Robert Deyo, (from Lexington) Beecher “Billy” Grose Jr. and incumbent Charles Winder) and (from the county) incumbent Timothy Goodbar.

In Glasgow, Mayor Paul Williams is a candidate for reelection, as are Town Council incumbents Lisa Rogers and Tom Camden.

Former Covington Mayor Stephanie Clark was tapped by area Democrats to be their nominee for the House of Delegates District 37. In the general election she will face Republican incumbent Terry Austin.

In the other two General Assembly races encompassing all of parts of the Rockbridge area, Republican Del. Christopher Head and Democratic nominee Jade Harris are running for state Senate District 3 while Republican incumbent Del. Ellen Campbell is squaring off against Democratic nominee Randolph Wolf for House of Delegates District 36.
