Lexington City Council member Claude H. Patton Jr. called on his fellow council members to launch a full scale attack on illegal drug use in the city. “It’s obvious that this community is in real trouble,” he said. -L.A. Laker Jerry West held a basketball camp at Virginia Military Institute. He called Lexington “a sleepy little town with very friendly people.” -A 72 percent increase in tourists visiting the Lexington- Rockbridge Chamber of Commerce headquarters was reported. In the period of January through May of 1972 there were 1,949 visitors compared to 3,333 in the same time frame in 1973.

Rockbridge resident Peter Adams of the U.S. Army’s 3rd Infantry Division in Iraq suffered a serious eye injury when his grenade launcher misfired and blew up in his face. - Longtime Lexington High School Latin teacher Carter Drake retired. She always encouraged her students to reach “ad astra,” i.e. to the stars.
