Steve Potter, Monty Potter, Donna Potter and Gwendolyn Johnson all won prizes during the annual state 4-H conference at Virginia Teach. - Washington and Lee University pledged to intensify its program toward educating new and returning students in the fall about illegal drugs, with an emphasis on the penalties users face. - The fuel shortage became evident at a meeting of the Rockbridge Board of Supervisors when just one bid was received for gasoline for county vehicles. Rabe Oil Co. submitted the lone bid at a price onethird higher than its contract price for the current year.

Reese McCormick retired after heading Rockbridge County’s 4-H program for 26 years. He wasn’t ready to retire, but “the state made me an offer I couldn’t refuse,” he said. - Lylburn Downing School was placed on the Virginia Landmarks register, recognized for its architectural, archaeological and cultural significance. -“Stonewall Country” began its 19th season run at Theater at Lime Kiln.
