Spotswood Committee Pleased With Discussions

At its meeting on Jan. 19, members of Lexington City Council heard an update from the recently formed Spotswood Building Committee regarding the efforts to update the design of the proposed development at 406 Spotswood Drive by Echelon Resources Inc.

Council members Marilyn Alexander and Leslie Straughan informed Council that they had met with representatives from Echelon to discuss changes to the design of the apartment building that are, Alexander noted, “in keeping with design elements that can utilize what our locality looks like.”

One suggestion that was made, she said, was to incorporate more rock and brick into the façade of the building, another being to add colors “that are more acceptable to the community in regards to our sky and our mountains and our landscaping and … using various colors throughout the design.”

Alexander also noted that discussions were made of “breaking up” sections of the building with different design elements, either horizontally or vertically, and that elements are being considered for the roof that “make the design look totally different.”

“I think that I can speak for all of us that we are much more pleased with the progress we’re making, and the design looks a thousand percent different than the one we saw a month ago,” Alexander said. “We’re just looking forward and we’re pleased.”

Straughan noted that the design was still a contemporary design, and that that was something Echelon was “set on.”

“They felt like they did not to want to create a false history by trying to make a historiclooking building,” she said. She added that she felt that Echelon has been “very receptive” to the suggestions and are trying to incorporate them into the building. Alexander added that she was “hopeful” about the progress being made.

Alexander and Straughan will meet with Echelon’s representatives again on Thursday, Jan. 25, to continue the discussion in hopes of finalizing the design for presentation to the community by Council’s Feb. 2 meeting.
