Glasgow Council Holds Hearing On Proposed Budget

There was a public hearing of the proposed budget for the coming year at this month’s Glasgow Town Council meeting.

There was a public hearing of the proposed budget for the coming year at this month’s Glasgow Town Council meeting.

Boyd Walker spoke to the Council concerning some issues like the amount of money proposed for the public library in the budget. He felt like it should be more than the $800plus proposed. He also expressed concern over abandoned houses in town, the POW flag that was once displayed in town and is now displayed on a pole in his yard, and issues with the two-part walking trail in town. There seems to be no signs at the end of the section from across from town hall, to the beauty shop noting the next section starting down across Va. 130.

The Farmers’ Market manager, Carolyn Bradley, noted it has at least 16 vendors registered; however, it only averages six to seven on Fridays, and two-to-three on Saturdays because not all vendors come all the time. The ones who come do provide produce, arts and crafts, pork skins, baked goods, frozen meats, eggs, etc. Products available vary from week to week. She also presented information on a small outbuilding for the market to store items used for the market, as the current storage building has been sold by the old Ruritan Club to a private individual. She was given the OK to order the building through Walmart, along with patio blocks to place under the building.

There was no report from Public Works, but it was announced that Ben Williams is a new hire to assist Chris Flint.

While it was announced at last month’s meeting that Andrea Bradley would be the new administrative assistant and Thomas Smals would be the next town manager, this changed. Andrea was notified by the town lawyer, Grace Crickenbarger, that she was no longer eligible for that position, reasons not disclosed, and Thomas Smals turned down the position of town manager.

During the month Council did hire Phil Robinette as the new town manager. Robinette was in attendance at the meeting and spoke to the group at the end of the meeting. It was mentioned by Mayor Paul Williams that they have a young woman helping out in the office and if she worked out, would be offered the job. After some discussion, Council members voted to appoint “someone” to fill out Andi Bradley’s term on Council. She would have been up for re-election this fall. There were a couple possibilities mentioned, but Council put off a vote on someone until next month. Williams reminded those who were up for reelection or for anyone interested in running for office, that they needed to register by June 20. Those up for reelection this fall are Tom Camden, Lisa Rogers and Paul Williams.
