Poluikis Named Teacher Of The Year For BVCPS

Buena Vista City Public Schools in May announced Peggie Poluikis as the division’s Teacher of the Year.

Buena Vista City Public Schools in May announced Peggie Poluikis as the division’s Teacher of the Year.

“Peggie is kind, considerate of others, and has a calm, caring personality that allows her to connect with students, teachers, parents and the community on many levels,” said Superintendent Tony Francis at the School Board’s meeting.

Poluikis has been teaching for eight years, with all those years being spent in BVCPS. At F.W. Kling Elementary School, Poluikis teaches math and reading in the special education department.

“I also try to help students in other subjects by adapting the work to suit their needs or by providing behavior support,” Poluikis told The News-Gazette. “I enjoy all the subjects that I teach, but if I had to pick a favorite, it would be reading.”

Poluikis is “well respected and considered an exemplary teacher by her peers and administration,” Francis said at the Board meeting.

She has a master’s degree and has training in supplemental phonics programs. All her training and experience has improved her teaching, allowing her students to make significant progress each year, Francis noted.

For Poluikis, being named Teacher of the Year was a great honor, she told The News-Gazette. “I felt so humbled to win, especially since there are so many amazing teachers at BVCPS,” she said.

The district gives the Teacher of the Year a ring to commemorate the accomplishment.

Poluikis looks forward to making memories with her elementary students next year. Students’ excitement, hope and tenacity are what make teaching so rewarding, she said.
