Volunteers and sponsors are needed for the area’s inaugural Conquer Chiari Walk Across America event Sept. 23 at the Rockbridge County High School track.
The Conquer Chiari Walk Across America is an annual fundraising and awareness event comprised of a series of local walks held on the same day. In 2022 the event was held both live and virtually involving thousands of participants and raised more than $300,000 for research and other patient centered programs. To date, these walks have raised $4.7 million for Chiari Malformation research.
Chiari Malformation is a serious neurological disorder in which the bottom part of the brain, the cerebellum, descends out of the skill and crowds the spinal cord, putting pressure on both the brain and spine. Symptoms vary and it can strike both children and adults, causing crippling headaches, neck pain, balance problems, trouble breathing, numbness and weakness in the limbs. It is estimated that Chiari affects over 300,000 people in the U.S.
There are incentive prizes for various levels of donations and sponsorship. The deadline to get company names or logos on the commemorative T-shirts is July 31. To become a sponsor, go to walk.conquerchiari.org. One can also register to walk at the event by going to this web address.
