“In Celebration of Trees: Winter” is the theme of a guided walk in Brushy Hills Preserve on Saturday, Jan. 28, beginning at 10 a.m. All interested in identifying and learning about trees are welcome. The outing will last about two hours.
David Rosher, the walk’s guide, plans to use a “groundup approach” to identifying trees in winter. “First we’ll look at leaves and fruits on the forest floor,” he noted, “and then go up from there, looking at bark, tree shape, and branching patterns.”
Rosher is an arborist and long-time student of forest biology. He has worked for a decade on forest health, invasive plant species management, and trail maintenance in Brushy Hills, and has assembled a preserve plant list that includes more than 70 different species of trees and shrubs.
Participants will meet at the Brushy Hills Trailhead, located at 1010 Union Run, and are reminded to wear shoes suitable for walking on woodland trails. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held on Sunday, Jan. 29, at 10 a.m. Call David Rosher with any questions at (540) 784-8291.
