The county took a giant step toward solving the trash disposal problem with the opening of its regional sanitary landfill. Big covered garbage containers were also being placed along county roads for use by county residents.
- Ruth Ann Herring opened a real estate office at 16 West Washington Street. - The Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors pledged its support to Lexington City Council in its efforts to combat illegal drug use.

A political action committee was formed to oppose Nestlé’s plans to build a water extraction and bottling facility at Big Spring in the vicinity of Kerrs Creek. About 30 people attended the new group’s first meeting at the Rockbridge Regional Library. - The Sugar Tree Inn in Northern Rockbridge County reopened under new ownership.
- The Rockbridge Area Free Clinic moved from its location at the old Boys Club building in Lexington to the former Williams-Wilson Funeral Home on U.S. 11 North.
