July 7, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: A simple solution to the student debt issue is for the students and schools to pay off the debts and leave the rest of us alone.
Somewhere around 70% student and 30% school cost sharing would work. The students can pay back according to what ever the administration wants to do. The schools can get their share from their endowments, cutting salaries of faculty and administration and the rest of the money they have squirreled away and send it to the Education Department for payment to the lending institutions.
If the schools do not want to participate, then all Congress has to do is take the schools’ share from future research money and grants they would have received from any and all federal agencies.
Simple enough? Get it done and stop bothering me. My wife and I paid off our loans 50-years ago and need our money to live on.
One more thing. Congress and the president need to gut higher education costs to put a stop to future cost of education issues. BRAD PRICE Buena Vista
