Joan Bolen Jones, 89, died June 25, 2023, at her son’s home in Hopewell.

She was born to Bertha and Lewis Bolen on March 2, 1934 in Lexington.

She was baptized at an early age in the city of Lexington and served as an active longtime member of First Baptist Church. She served as an usher and a choir member for many years until her health failed. While she was recovering from her illness, she lived with her son and attended the Friendship Baptist Church, Hopewell.

Mrs. Jones graduated second in her class from Lylburn Downing High School in 1954. She was also a member of the school’s basketball team, and was editor of the school’s newspaper. She married Howard Jones in 1984, and they were married for 27 years until his death in 2011.

Mrs. Jones worked for over 35 years as a nurse’s aide. She worked both at Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington and in private home services during her tenure.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Dorothy Richardson and Delores Davis.

Mrs. Jones is survived by three daughters, Robin Peatross, Harriet Threat and Mayme Grant, and one son, William Bailey; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, July 15, at noon at First Baptist Church by Pastor McKinley A. Williams.
