Glasgow Town Manager Phil Robinette took his place at the Council table for his first official Council meeting last week.
He was given the authority by Council to pursue obtaining a grant to pay the salary of a town police officer for one to three years. Since the resignation of the previous town police officer, the Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Office has been covering the town.
Gary Baker, owner of Fat Lighter Co., spoke to Council about his purchase of the old vacant building across from Town Hall, which he proposes to use for his business headquarters. He restores old, sometimes abandoned, buildings, giving them new life and purpose. He will be restoring the building, keeping in mind its history in the town.
The farmers market manager, Carolyn Bradley, noted things had been slow for a couple of weeks, but with local gardens beginning to produce, things should be picking up in the future. She also noted the storage building has arrived, and as soon as they can get a proper base foundation down, they will get it installed on the lot.
Chris Flint with Public Works and Utilities noted they have been busy cleaning up debris from recent storms, especially around the boat landing. He noted surveyors have been working in town in connection with a sewer project.
Flint also reminded everyone of the upcoming music events on July 22 and Aug. 12 and the Rockbridge Regional Fair in September.
The Planning Commission will continue to accept the public surveys that went out recently, through the end of July.
Concerning the filling of the vacant Council seat, Tom Camden made a motion that they “not fill the seat at this time since the previous Council person would have been up for re-election this fall.” Council approved the motion.
In his manager’s report, Robinette noted that he has talked to Council members and some citizens, getting ideas of what is needed or wanted in town.
He and a Council member and husband visited the recently vacated Presbyterian Church property to inquire about securing it for town use.
He said he has ordered a new POW/MIA flag that will be placed on the pole at Town Hall.
They have also started the process of eliminating the issue of uncut grass and neglected properties, he said.
