Mrs. Ed Higgins, 79, of the Kerrs Creek area was bitten twice by a copperhead while she was collecting her mail. She gave the snake several good whacks with her walking cane. While she was reported in good condition at Stonewall Jackson Hospital, the snake was pronounced dead. - New standards for quality education adopted by the State Board of Education were explained to the Buena Vista School Board by school superintendent James Bradford. The new standards called for Buena Vista to spend a minimum of $710 per students, up from the previous requirement of $628.

Wayne Redrode, a member of the Rockbridge Regional Fair’s board of directors, said that the fair attracted between 15,000 and 20,000 spectators that year. -- - Dr. W. Barton Dick retired after providing area residents with orthopedic care for 29 years.
