A local family has set up a scholarship in memory of their son for Rockb ridge County High School seniors and alumni who are pursuing a career related to special education services.

The Nathaniel G. Hughes Memorial Scholarship is intended to help students pursuing a career as a special education teacher, occupational therapist, physical therapist, or speech and language pathologist.

Nathan Hughes of Lexington, who died at age 18 on March 17, 2022, from complications of Covid pneumonia, enjoyed the blessing of working with the finest teachers and therapists available, said his parents, Michael and Michelle Hughes.

In cooperation with DePaul Community Resources, the Hughes family hopes to allow future generations of students to have excellent and compassionate teachers and therapists as well.

His mother described Nathan as “a funny and feisty fellow who brought joy to the lives of those who knew him.

“We are forever indebted to the professionals who served and loved our son,” she said. “Although he is no longer with us physically, he leaves a legacy that continues to touch the lives of many.”

Anyone interested in applying for the scholarship can get an application by sending an email to [email protected] or lisa_vanravenswaay@ rockbr idge.k12.va.ua. The applications can be dropped off to Lisa Vansravenswaay at RCHS or Michelle Hughes at Central Elementary School. The deadline is April 14.
