A strategic economic development plan that will guide Rockbridge County’s efforts to recruit and retain business and industry over the next five years was adopted July 24 by the Board of Supervisors.
Nearly two years in the making and formulated by a 21-member steering committee of local government, business and community leaders, the plan will allow the county to take “a giant leap forward” in realizing its economic development potential, said Brandy Flint, the county’s economic development director. “This bold and innovative initiative signals the county’s commitment to fostering sustainable economic growth, creating new opportunities and enhancing the overall quality of life for its residents and businesses.”
Flint said the plan was “developed in collaboration with industry experts, community stakeholders and local leaders. [It is] a carefully crafted road map designed to capitalize on the region’s unique assets and strengths while addressing the challenges and opportunities of the 21st-century economy.”
A key pillar of the plan, she said, is to strive for a “diversified business ecosystem and business support services. The plan aims to attract and retain a diverse range of businesses within the county, promoting resilience and reducing reliance on any single sector. By offering incentives and support, Rockbridge County seeks to entice both established corporations and emerging startups to invest in the region as well support the retention and expansion of existing businesses.” The plan focuses on “talent development and retention. Recognizing that skilled human capital is the cornerstone of a thriving economy, the plan outlines strategies to support local and regional workforce development efforts that will enhance a robust talent pipeline. Educational partnerships, vocational training programs and initiatives to retain local graduates will be implemented to nurture a skilled and capable workforce.”
The plan alludes to the importance of “infrastructure, connectivity, housing and child care. To support economic growth and enhance competitiveness, the plan outlines goals and objectives for infrastructure improvements and investments. This includes expanding broadband access and ensuring a business-friendly regulatory environment. Additionally, the plan calls for the development of comprehensive resource lists for businesses and citizens to easily find information regarding housing, childcare, and talent development.”
Collaboration and partnerships are critical to the success of the plan, Flint noted. She said the plan “emphasizes the importance of collaboration among various stakeholders, including government entities, businesses, educational institutions and community organizations. Working together, these partners will be able to combine their resources and expertise for maximum impact.”
County officials are confident, according to Flint, that “this visionary plan will serve as a guiding light for Rockbridge County’s economic future, creating a flourishing and dynamic community for generations to come. The adoption of the Strategic Economic Development Plan marks a defining moment in the county’s history, demonstrating its determination to build a prosperous and sustainable future.”
