On Sunday, July 30, Evangelist Lucy Strowbridge was the guest speaker at the 11 a.m. worship service of the Collierstown Presbyterian Church. Lemonade on the Lawn was provided by the Christian Education Committee on the front lawn after the worship service.
The Collierstown Presbyterian Women are filling canvas tote bags with school supplies for distribution by Church World Service to students in need. Lists of needed supplies and the canvas totes are available to anyone who would like to assist with this project. Filled bags should be returned to the church by Aug. 20 for distribution by Church World Service. This year’s goal is to prepare 200 school bags for needy students. The church community is invited to participate in this effort and can obtain bags and information by calling the church office, (540) 463-5918). Donations for the purchase of supplies to be used in filling the bags may also be given. Those wishing to make a financial gift to the School Bag campaign should designate the gift for school bags and mail it to Collierstown Presbyterian Church, 31 Church Drive, Lexington, VA 24450. Community support is greatly appreciated.
There will be a one night “Community Revival” at the Effinger Volunteer Fire Department on the evening of Aug. 10. The featured speakers for the event are the Rev. Kirk Wade and his wife Dr. Janelle Wade of Just Believe Ministries. The evening will begin with a covered-dish dinner at 6 p.m. followed by the revival service at 7. Those coming for supper are asked to bring a side dish or dessert to share. Kenney’s chicken will be provided. Free child care will be available for children between the ages of 3 and 7. Hosting the event are Union View Advent Christian Church, Mt. Horeb and Collierstown United Methodist churches, Oxford and Collierstown Presbyterian churches, and Rapps Mill Church.
Four members of Union View Advent Christian Church were baptized following the worship service on Sunday, July 23. One member of the church youth group recently attended a week long church camp in Alleghany County.
The sale of the 2024 Effinger Community Birthday Calendar continues until Aug. 15. The calendar is being prepared and sold by the Effinger Ruritan Club. The cost of the calendar is $3. Birthday, anniversary and memorial listings are 30 cents each. Calendars and listings may be purchased by contacting a Ruritan Club member.
Plans for the Palmer Ice Cream Supper sponsored by the Effinger Ruritan Club have been made. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 19, from 4 p.m. until dark at the Palmer Community Center, 1230 Blue Grass Trail. Homemade ice cream, hamburgers, French fries and music are the order of the day. T here will also be a 50/50 drawing. Volunteers willing to lend a hand with this year’s event are asked to contact Club President Chris Cartwright. The Effinger Ruritan Club looks forward to hosting this popular community event.
