Collette Barry-Rec of Lexington, the founder of the Care-Box Project, died Tuesday.
A spokesman for Lexington Police Department said today that the department is investigating her death by a gunshot wound. The investigation is ongoing.
Barry-Rec launched, with her husband, the Care-Box Project, which sends supplies and goodies to local troops overseas, in 2004. By 2021, the organization had shipped almost 2,800 packages.
She ran unsuccessfully for Lexington City Council last year.
