The Valley Program for Aging Services is offering two workshop series designed to prevent falls this autumn. Both will be held at Maury River Senior Services, 2137 Magnolia Ave., Buena Vista.

A Matter of Balance

The primary cause of falls in older adults is not tripping, dangerous surfaces or dizziness, but rather a fear of falling. Too often, this fear causes individuals to shuffle, look at the ground immediately in front of their feet, and restrict their activity. This restriction leads to weakened muscles, decreased stamina and increasing social isolation.

“A Matter of Balance” encourages participants, in eight two-hour sessions, to admit and address their fear of falling, to identify situations in which a fall is more likely, to be willing to ask for and accept assistance when needed, and to remain active in their communities.

Through information, discussion and extremely gentle exercise, both physical and mental ability to avoid falls is strengthened. “A Matter of Balance” is designed for older adults who are at least moderately active and without serious medical conditions that increase their risk of falling.

“A Matter of Balance” certified coaches Hillary Bennington and Jeri Schaff will lead the series on Mondays from 1 to 3 p.m., beginning Sept. 11. Enrollment is limited and registrations must be received by Sept. 7.

Participants may register online at vpas.info/health-and-fitness or by calling (540) 261-7474. The $25 series fee is waived for those 60 and older who complete program paperwork.

Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention Chris Bowring is returning with another series of Tai Chi classes on Tuesday afternoons. As taught by Bowring, Tai Chi’s slow, controlled movements build muscle strength, improve balance, gently free up stiff joints and relieve stress. All movements are done in an upright standing position, but may be done seated for those unable to stand.

All classes begin Sept. 5, and registrations must be received by Sept. 1. Participants may register online at vpas.info/health-andfitness or by calling (540) 2617474. These classes are offered free of charge, although donations are accepted. Tai Chi I, from 1 to 2 p.m., is a beginner level class for adults 60 and older who are new to Tai Chi.

Tai Chi II: Intermediate, from 2 to 3 p.m., is for adults 60 and older who have completed Tai Chi I.

Tai Chi II: Advanced, from 3 to 4 p.m., is for adults 60 and older who have completed Tai Chi II: Intermediate.
