Kendal Launches Talk Series

As part of Kendal at Lexington’s commitment to lifelong learning, “KaLex” has announced a three-part series titled “Stories from the Shenandoah Valley,” which will showcase fascinating tales of the region’s history and culture.

The series, jointly presented by KaLex residents and historians Ed Dooley and Katharine Brown, promises an engaging exploration of the Shenandoah Valley’s past, offering attendees a glimpse into its vibrant heritage, said a spokesperson. The event is free and open to the public.

Following each talk, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a wine reception. Attendees are asked to RSVP to the event by emailing Erica Turman, director of marketing at Kendal at Lexington, at eturman@kalex. kendal.org.

The inaugural event of the series is set to commence today, Aug. 9, at 4 p.m. in Kendal Hall.

In his “Whiskey Distilling in the Shenandoah Valley: Not a Moonshine Tale,” Brown will enlighten the audience about the Shenandoah Valley’s once-thriving whiskey industry. Attendees will learn about the history of the region and the significant role it played as the center of a legitimate whiskey industry between the colonial frontier settlement of the 1730s and the Civil War in the 1860s.

Brown will also share facts about whiskey distilling, shedding light on the notable local leaders involved in the trade, the challenges faced, and the impact on the local economy and institutions. To add a delightful touch, attendees will also have the opportunity to savor some fine old Virginia rye whiskey after the talk.
