William “Doc” Carson Mast, 59, owner of the Mast Produce store on U.S. 60 East of Lexington was found lying in the doorway of his store after being shot during a robbery. He died on the way to Stonewall Jackson Hospital. - Washington and Lee University athletic director William “Bill” McHenry was named to succeed E. Graham “Buck” Leslie as head coach of the school’s football team. - The Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors supported the Virginia Game Commission’s legislative request to make it illegal to carry a loaded rifle or shotgun in a vehicle and to flash a spotlight in a deer field after 10 p.m.

Area NASCAR driver Rick Mast announced he was retiring from racing after being diagnosed with acute and chronic carbon monoxide poisoning. - Jim Dedrick, production manager of The News-Gazette and the newspaper’s print shop, retired after 43 years. He agreed to stay on as consultant. - Two Virginia Military Institute cadets were dismissed from the school after they were arrested for armed robbery in Radford. The weapon they were using turned out to be a toy handgun.
