The Rockbridge NAACP welcomes the community to join them for a casual afternoon of music, food and inspiring speakers at the James E. Thompson Sr. Community Center in Glasgow at 2 p.m. on Aug. 19.
Event speakers Glasgow Mayor Paul Williams and Jade Harris will expand on the 2023 theme “Community United: Spotlight on Glasgow” as they share the town’s vibrant history and their own personal experiences growing up in Glasgow. The Rockbridge NAACP will be honoring long-time educator and resident Roberta Lyle in the very building where she taught during segregation.
Unlike the past Freedom Fund Banquets, this year the event is being offered free of charge. No tickets are required.
“Everyone is welcome to stop by and share our excitement as we bring our Freedom Fund event to the community of Glasgow,” a spokesperson said. Food will be provided by Melissa Wooding owner of Let Them Eat Cake, and music will be by the Union Baptist Church Choir.
The Rockbridge NAACP is grateful to the Rockbridge Regional Tourism Board for its sponsorship to help with this event. The Rockbridge NAACP is asking everyone to consider making a donation to the NAACP Freedom Fund to support its work in the community.
The mission of the NAACP is to achieve equity, political rights, and social inclusion by advancing policies and practices that expand human and civil rights, eliminate discrimination, and accelerate the well-being, education, and economic security of Black people and all persons of color.
