There will be a one night “Community Revival” at the Effinger Volunteer Fire Department tomorrow, Thursday, Aug. 10. The featured speakers for the event are the Rev. Kirk Wade and his wife Dr. Janelle Wade of Just Believe Ministries. The evening will begin with a covereddish dinner at 6 followed by the revival service at 7. Those coming for supper are asked to bring a side dish or dessert to share. Kenney’s chicken will be provided. F ree child care will be available for children between the ages of 3 and 7. Hosting the event are Union View Advent Christian Church, Mt. Horeb and Collierstown United Methodist churches, Oxford and Collierstown Presbyterian churches, and Rapps Mill Church.
On Sunday, Aug. 6, Greg Jewitt was the guest speaker at the 11 a.m. worship service of the Collierstown Presbyterian Church. Following the service, lemonade on the lawn was provided by the Witness & Congregational Care Committee on the front lawn for all to enjoy. Roger Lees led the Lake Robertson worship service for campers at the campground’s worship pavilion at 9 a.m.
The Collierstown Presbyterian Women are filling canvas tote bags with school supplies for distribution by Church World Service to students in need. The group has completed 125 bags or 65 percent of its goal of making 200 bags. The church community is invited to participate in this effort. A list of needed supplies for each bag is posted on the church’s Facebook page and can be purchased for approximately $4.50. Canvas tote bags have been made and are ready to be filled. To arrange to leave school supplies for the project, call the church office at (540) 4635918. Monetary donations for the purchase of supplies to fill each bag should be made payable to Collierstown Presbyterian Church and mailed to 31 Church Drive, Lexington, VA 24450.
The sale of the 2024 Effinger Community Birthday Calendar continues until Aug. 15. The calendar is being prepared and sold by the Effinger Ruritan Club. The cost of the calendar is $3. Birthday, anniversary and memorial listings are 30 cents each. Calendars and listings may be purchased by contacting a Ruritan Club member.
Plans for the Palmer Ice Cream Supper sponsored by the Effinger Ruritan Club have been made. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 19, from 4 p.m. until dark at the Palmer Community Center, 1230 Blue Grass Trail. Homemade ice cream in a variety of flavors, hamburgers with all the trimmings and French fries will be available for purchase. Bring a comfortable lawn chair as there will be lots of good music to enjoy. There will also be a 50/50 drawing. Volunteers willing to lend a hand with this year’s event are asked to contact Club President Chris Cartwright.
The Effinger Volunteer Fire Department’s last barbecue chicken sale of the summer will be held on Saturday, Aug. 26, beginning at noon. On that day barbecue chicken can be purchased as half chicken only or as a dinner which includes two sides, applesauce, roll and iced tea. The side choices will be green beans, baked beans, potato salad, macaroni salad and coleslaw. Chicken will be available until a ll i s s old. F ood items may be purchased as carryout but some seating for indoor dining will be available.
