7, 2023 Editor, The News-Gazette: Like the zombie characters in TV’s “Walking Dead,” Congressman Ben Cline sleepwalks behind Donald Trump. He defends his master’s pronouncements of innocence by saying, “If they can do this to a former president, they can do it to you.” This disregards a basic principle of the American judicial system, “Innocent until proven guilty.” Yes, Mr. Cline, if your constituents are charged with breaking the law, they deserve to prove their innocence in court. That is how our system works.
Evidence presented to grand juries to date has determined that Trump should go to trial. If he is innocent of the charges as he claims, then a jury will acquit him. What does he have to fear?
Mr. Cline, please emerge from your Trump-induced stupor and realize that his interests lie in saving himself, not your party or the nation. If you are a true patriot and wish to preserve our democracy for your children, it is time for you to level with the voters. This will allow you to return the Republican Party to its former principles of law-abiding governance. FRANK SETTLE Lexington
