All westbound lanes of Interstate 64 just west of Lexington were closed for several hours last Wednesday for sinkhole repairs, and one lane remained closed until early Thursday afternoon.
According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, the sinkhole was discovered in the right lane at mile marker 53.8 just past the Maury River bridges during routine maintenance work Wednesday morning.
The right lane was immediately closed with crews monitoring the site. The hole excavation work was in the right lane, but all westbound lanes were closed between Interstate 81 and exit 50 Wednesday afternoon for to allow repairs to begin.
The right lane would remain closed until the repairs were completed about 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
The sinkhole was approximately 20 feet deep, with the opening 9 feet wide and 11 feet long.
Sinkhole repairs included excavating the hole to determine its size and the stability of the surrounding ground before back-filling it and repairing the surrounding roadway.
