McCorkle To Present Recital At Mt. Carmel

Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church in Steeles Tavern will offer a recital by Lexington organist William McCorkle on Sunday, Aug. 27, at 4 p.m.

The concert is part of the church’s celebration of the 40th anniversary of its Taylor and Boody pipe organ (Opus 8, 1983). The program, planned to show off the distinctive sound colors of the Mt. Carmel instrument, will include works of J. S. Bach, Buxtehude, Frescobaldi, Pachelbel, Haydn, and Walcha.

A versatile keyboardist, conductor, and composer, McCorkle has performed over many decades throughout the eastern U.S. and Europe. His repertoire covers music of many styles and periods, and encompasses solo, chamber, and concerto literature.

McCorkle has directed the Rockbridge Chorus for some 40 seasons, leading the ensemble in performances of oratorios and choral masterworks, while also venturing into opera, folk, and popular music. As organist/director of music at Lexington Presbyterian Church, he has continued and enhanced the church’s rich tradition of music in worship and in concert. For a number of years he has been an instructor of piano and organ at Washington and Lee University. In recent decades he has turned his attention to keyboard improvisation, and to composition, particularly for liturgical use.

The concert is open to the public without charge. The church is located at 6410 Lee Jackson Highway (U.S. 11) in Steeles Tavern.
