The Community Foundation has announced the addition of three new board members. They are Ingrid Barber, Chuck Barger and Matthew Fogo.
Charles W. “Chuck” Barger III was born in Rockbridge County and began formal education in local schools. He also attended Mercersburg A c a d e m y , Virginia Tech ( e c o n o m ics), and the Fuqua School at Duke University, which formed the beginnings of an entrepreneurial career.
He began employment in 1974 as the third generation to manage Charles W. Barger and Son, a family-owned concrete and crushed stone producer in Lexington, and currently serves as its president. In the late 1980s after building Stonewall Square from a reclaimed quarry site, he began investing in commercial real estate leases which now span the Southeast with restaurants and retail shopping centers.
Barger has served as president of many local organizations, such as Rockbridge Area Health Center, Chamber of Commerce, Lime Kiln Theater, and Rotary. He has also served on the boards of the Rockbridge SPCA and numerous other state and county associations. Between company and personal contributions, he has contributed or supported such organizations as Boxerwood, Central Elementary, Rockbridge SPCA, Rockbridge Christmas Basket Program, RARA, and virtually any other nonprofit that cares for those who cannot look after themselves.
He is married to Susan, a retired ophthalmologist, and with her assistance, is currently reimagining a farmhouse/ dairy barn just outside Lexington with 10 cats. -Matt Fogo and his family moved to Rockbridge County in 1978 after his father’s retirement from the military. He quickly became entrenched in all the community had to offer, including owning three horses, playing tennis and golf, becoming a member of the high school marching band, and enjoying country life.
Post-college, he rose through the ranks of the accounting profession, becoming CFO of a government contracting firm in Northern Virginia. He soon moved away from accounting and found his passion for technology, working for a leading provider of back-office applications for project-oriented businesses. His career in technology included consulting, heading up product management, running sales departments, and running marketing functions. For the past several years, he has been an executive with a private equity firm running the opportunity-facing functions of a systems integration firm headquartered in Reston.
Fogo currently serves on the board of directors for the local organization, Hosting Ukrainian Families (HUF), where he serves as the finance chair. H e is former board member of the Rockbridge SPCA, a former member of Main Street Lexington, and currently serves on the vestry at Grace Episcopal Church.
Fogo graduated from Lexington High School. He received a bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance from the University of Mary Washington and a master’s degree from George Washington University in federal government contracting. Today, he splits his time between homes in Lexington and Cape Cod, Mass., with his husband Kevin and their two dogs.
-Barber, executive director for Alleghany Highlands Community Services (AHCS) for the past 14 years, is a native of Clifton Forge. Prior to working at AHCS, she was director of budget and finance for Alleghany County Public Schools for five years. She also worked in the banking industry for over 11 years, surviving seven mergers and acquisitions, ending in the role of area operations manager for BB&T. -At the July board meeting J. Stephen “Steve” Grist was elected as the chairman of the board. Greg Madson was elected vice chairman, Thomas Gosse, treasurer, and Joanne Robblee, secretary, respectively.
Other Foundation board members include Warren “Buddy” Bryan, former chairman, Ralph Caldroney, Christy Harris, Robert Minor, Lynn Rainville, Ben Worth and Bruce Young.
