PM Netters Fall At Alleghany

Alleghany knocked off the Parry McCluer High School volleyball team 3-0 in Covington on Thursday evening.

Alleghany knocked off the Parry McCluer High School volleyball team 3-0 in Covington on Thursday evening.

The Cougars (1-1) defeated the Fighting Blues (0-2) by a 25-15, 25-7, 25-20 count in the second match of the season for both teams.

Sydney Mahaffey paced PM with eight kills and five digs, while Natalie Mohler tallied 13 assists. Kadence Zollman and Peira Conner posted two blocks apiece for the Blues, with Zollman also recording five digs.

Alleghany and Covington high schools merged entering the 2023-24 academic year. The former Covington High School was one of the Blues’ longtime Pioneer District rivals – and typically one of the most competitive programs in the league.

“Alleghany is a very strong team with the combination of both the Alleghany and Covington programs,” PM head coach Jessie Moala said.

After battling hard in a 3-0 home loss two nights earlier against another bigger school, Rockbridge County, the Blues are also still putting the pieces together during a tough nondistrict schedule.

“I thought our girls did a lot of things well” against Alleghany, Moala said. “We found some areas of growth to work on during our next few practices, but I am looking forward to playing them again at our home.”

PM was slated to visit RC last night, and the Blues will travel to Altavista on Thursday before playing host to Altavista on Tuesday. The rematch with Alleghany is scheduled for next Wednesday, Sept. 6. All three nights are scheduled to start with junior varsity action at 5:30 p.m.
